Abbotsbury Community Speed Watch: Making Our Village Safer

Following requests from the Parish Council and the dedication of Abbotsbury Councillors to encourage community involvement, we are pleased to announce the formation of a Community Speed Watch (CSW) team in our village.

Our team currently consists of seven trained volunteers, with four more residents eager to join and participate in the next training session.

The Abbotsbury CSW team operates at four designated sites within the village, adhering to specific rules regarding session timing—such as conducting activities during daylight hours and favourable weather conditions.

The first CSW session took place on July 31st, from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM.

During this hour, 247 vehicles passed through the village, with one recorded traveling at over 35mph. The mere presence of our team had a noticeable impact, with many drivers slowing down as they approached.

In our second session, held on August 7th, from 7.30am to 8.30am seven vehicles were recorded exceeding 35mph, underscoring the need for continued vigilance and action.

The primary goal of the CSW initiative is to reduce traffic speeds through Abbotsbury, enhancing safety for all members of our community. Additionally, the data we collect could serve as vital evidence in support of a potential speed limit reduction from the current 30mph to 20mph. This change would contribute significantly to making our village a safer and more pleasant place to live.

If you are interested in volunteering or would like to support this initiative, please get in touch with Councillor Pete Reid at [email protected] or call 07876 252203.

Together, we can make a real difference in our community.
